WINGS - WOMEN IN GOD'S SERVICE - Adult Ministries

The "WINGS" Women's Ministry seeks to provide opportunities for Bible study, times of spiritual inspiration and renewal, and the building of friendships among women. We meet at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of each month (at the church) and have a Small Group Bible Study (The Lydia GROW group) that meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (also at the church.) All women are invited to attend either or both events. Additionally, our women have enjoyed attending occasional retreats, national women's conferences, mission projects and fun outings together. In May 2008, we sponsored a Yard Sale and raised over $2300.00 for "Break the Chains", a ministry of the American Baptist Women, which is fighting human trafficking, the fastest growing criminal industry in the world and one which enslaves an estimated 800,000 women and children each year. In 2009, our "Bring Your Change To Break the Chains" jug raised an additional $1100.00. For more information about this, go to www.abwmbreakthechains.org.

Every Christ-follower is called to help care for those in need. Through our association with Better Way Ministry (located in the Short North), we help provide a meal to those who rely on BWM for basic life needs. On the first Tuesday evening of each month, we go to BWM to deliver and help serve the meal, as well as lead a worship service and visit with those attending. We also provide an annual financial gift to BWM and have a Better Way Ministry collection of warm clothing items each December.

If your interested in participating in this ministry, please contact the church (614-764-1141.)

They are all questions that are part of the world in which we live today. They could be called "hot button" issues on which people have distinct opinions and take specific sides, politically and theologically. In between, there are people trying to find out what to do in a world that changes every day. Politicians and activists don't seem to have the answers - Ask 100 people and you might get 100 opinions. So, what DOES the Bible say and what can we do when faced with an issue for which there are no easy answers. Join us each Sunday morning starting February 28 as we explore some of these together. By the way, if you think you are just going to hear some pat answers you heard a hundred times before, think again . . .

In August 2009, our Christian Education Team made the prayerful decision that, after 9 years, we would develop a new Children's Ministry on Sunday evening that will replace AWANA. A planning team is currently developing this new ministry offering that we believe will more effective in helping children learn more about faith in Jesus and have a good spiritual foundation for life. We also believe that this will less of a financial burden on families during these difficult economic times. The kick-off for this new ministry, which will include Bible learning, special theme nights and a lot of fun, will be in January 2010. In the meantime, we will be offering some special family events (like the Autumn Adventure on October 25) for everyone to enjoy. As more details are available, we'll let you know!

Grades 6-12 are a mixture of excitement, challenge and change. The youth of the 21st century want to know how they can find a purpose for living as they build significant relationships with the people in their lives. Sawmill Baptist Church values youth because we know they are leaders both today and in the future and that God loves them. We know we have a tremendous privilege and a great responsibility sharing God's love with them and helping them understand what it means to be a person of purpose. Activities are designed to allow youth to invite their friends, including opportunities to help them to help others and trips to special youth events offered by para-church organizations, allowing them to experience a wider understanding of what it means to be a part of the family of God.

THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE:

*An environment where youth grow and become transformed by God.

*Creating and teaching discipleship and a genuine love of Jesus.

*"Hands-on" ministry opportunities.

*Times for fun and relaxation.

All youth grades 6-12 are invited on Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings and are encouraged to invite their friends. Elevation is led by Youth Minister Pat Castoe. You can reach Pat by e-mail at at pat.castoe@gmail.com.

Meet Pastor David - Meet Pastor David

Thank you for visiting Sawmill Baptist's website. I hope that you'll have time to take a look around and see what we doing as we are "Connecting with people to connect them with Jesus." One of the things most people want to know about a church has to do with the pastor: Questions like, "Who is he? Why would he want to be a pastor? Is he allowed to like 'normal people' stuff?" Most of all, "What does he believe as a Christian?"Last question first - I became a Christian when I was 9-years old. My parents took me to church and I heard all the Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments from people who cared about me and wanted me to know how much God loves me. When I was 9, I knew that God loved me and wanted me to go to heaven when I died. I also knew that Jesus had died on the cross so I could be forgiven of my sins. One day, during a church service, the pastor asked anyone who wanted to be "Born Again" (ask Jesus to be the Savior and Leader of his/her life) to come up to the front so he could pray with them. During the song they were singing, I went up. No sparks flew - no rush of wind - no fancy anything - Just a young boy who wanted to accept the love God had offered the best way a 9-year boy could.During the next 20 years, a lot happened - I had the normal pains of being a teenager, went to college, got a job, had cancer (and recovered), got married to a super lady named Paulette and became an instant dad to Charity and Chad, had cancer again (recovered again), was a teacher, a store manager, a loan office manager and, in 1988, left for seminary to study to be a Pastor. I have pastored churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana and have been at Sawmill since May 2006. (There are a lot more details. You can e-mail me if you'd like to know more.) That also helps to answer, "Who is he?" Now, why would I want to be a pastor? Mostly because I know that is what God has gifted me to be, but also because I think it is the best job in the world. I get to spend each day doing whatever needs done to help people have a relationship with God that starts on earth and lasts forever. Not many jobs involved eternal benefits. I also love to help people make positive, permanent life changes using God's principles from the Bible. What about liking "normal stuff?" Yes, I like a lot of normal stuff - I am a fan of both the Pittsburgh Steelers & Penguins (I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area) and the Indianapolis Colts (I adopted them when I lived in Indianapolis.) I enjoy working out on a regular basis with Paulette (that super lady I married in 1984.) I like "Mike & Ike" candy (It's not an addiction, but I keep a regular supply available at home) and Paulette's cooking (the reason I also work out regularly.) I like the great music from the 1970's (Chicago, Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Carpenters), but also like some more contemporary Christian groups (Jars of Clay, Jeremy Camp, Casting Crowns.) And, I enjoy any opportunity to get a new power tool. My favorite restaurant? Locally, it's a coin flip between Fazolis and O'Charley's, but my absolute favorite is Johnny Rocco's Italian Grill in Niagara Falls, Canada. Anyway, enough about me. I hope I'll have an opportunity to meet you sometime soon. On the pages of this website are the times for worship and other groups that meet during the week. Best time to catch me is on Sunday morning (or call the church during the week if you'd like to drop by.) Unless I'm on vacation (one of the other "normal stuff" things that I like), I'll be here. If you have any questions, just call me at 614-764-1141 or by e-mail at pastordwn@aol.com. I'll be glad to answer them. Hope to see you soon. In the meantime, remember that you were created by God to love Him and have a relationship with Him that last forever!

What does it mean to really have you faith tested? One of those "rubber meets the road" moments when your life it at a crossroads? Starting January 11, we are going to begin to look at what that means for our church and our lives as we look into Matthew 14:22-33, where Peter literally walked on the water - at least for a moment.

Together, we'll look at what it means to take a great step of faith, how to use what God gives you and how to handle moments of failure. It is the kick-off for Sawmill Baptist's 5 year program called "Walking On Water." We hope to be with us and get in on the ground floor of something special!

January 11 - LOST PEOPLE MATTER TO GOD, SO . . . . WHAT?

January 18 - HOW TO PREPARE FOR GOD'S WAVE

January 25 - A WALK ON THE WATER

February 1 - OPENING THE GIFT YOU HAVE

February 8 - HOW TO GET YOUR FEET WET

February 15 - HOW TO OVERCOME THE MOMENT OF FAILURE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQ

1. What is your worship service like?

Our 10:45 a.m. service is approximately 60-75 minutes in length. It features our Praise Team leading contemporary music with a touch of traditional music, occasional dramas and multi-media elements, as well as a relevant message based on a biblical text. The atmosphere is also relaxed, friendly and comfortable.

2. What is considered appropriate dress for your church?

We don't make dress an issue at our church. We have folk who feel comfortable in jeans and those who like ties and dresses. Feel free to dress in a way that's appropriate for you.

3. What's available for my children on Sunday mornings?

During our Sunday School time (9:30 – 10:35 a.m.) classes are offered for children and youth of all ages. There is also an adult small group that meets during that same time frame.

During the 10:45 a.m. service we provide nursery care for infants and small children (up through age 2) as well as an additional activity and learning time for older children (ages 3 – grade 5). Older children worship with their families until the offering when they're dismissed for their program.

4. Are guests expected to give an offering in your services?

No. You are our guest and we're very glad that you've decided to spend some of your valuable time worshiping God with us. You are free to give an offering, but you're certainly not expected to do so.

5. Are guests singled out or forced to identify themselves?

No. We realize many guests are "church shopping" and just want to check us out initially. Our Front Line Team (greeter & ushers) will extend a friendly welcome to you when you walk in and provide you with some information about the church. But you will not be asked to identify yourself publicly, wear a badge, stand up, raise your hand or be embarrassed in any way.

6. What kind of Baptist are you?

There are several Baptist denominations and many independent Baptist churches in our country. We're affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA – the oldest Baptist denomination in the United States. Our church could be described as evangelical and conservative in terms of theology.

7. What does your church believe?

Baptists are non-creedal, meaning we do not have an official statement of faith to which all members must subscribe. Nevertheless, all staff and elders of the church must hold to the following beliefs in order to serve in their positions of leadership. You should also expect these beliefs to be assumed in the Pastor's Sunday messages.

We believe the Bible is the authoritative and inspired Word of God and provides all the information necessary to live a faithful and obedient life before God.

We believe God is three persons in one, the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe Jesus Christ is the incarnation of the second person of the Trinity: the Son of God.

We believe Jesus is fully divine and human.

We believe Jesus was born of a virgin woman named Mary.

We believe Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross for the sins of humanity and rose again physically from the dead.

We believe Jesus ascended into heaven following his resurrection and that he will return again someday in the future.

We believe that human beings are sinful and cannot save themselves.

We believe that eternal life and/or salvation is a gift of God's grace that cannot be either earned or deserved through human behavior.

We believe this gift of salvation is received by faith in Jesus and his finished work of redemption.

We believe a person is born again by regeneration through the Holy Spirit.

We believe every believer is called to live an increasingly obedient, Spirit-filled life as an expression of gratitude and love for the gift of eternal life.

We believe every Christian is a member of the universal, spiritual Church – the Body of Christ – and ought to join a local expression of that entity, i.e. a local church for the purposes of worship, growth and outreach.

We believe that there will be an eternal judgment and that those who have trusted Christ will enter into heaven and those who have not trusted Christ will enter into hell.

No Title - Break The Chains SA

BREAK THE CHAINS - AN END TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking is the 2nd largest criminal industry in the world and the fastest growing. It victimizes women and children by subjecting them to exploitation through fraud or coercion. Many are forced to work in prostitution or the sex entertainment industry, as well as in domestic servitude and restaurant, janitorial, sweatshop factory and migrant agricultural work. Traffickers use fear and forced confinement to keep their victims enslaved. Each year, approximately 600,000 to 800,000 victims are trafficked across the international borders world-wide, with 14,500 and 17,500 into the United States. Victims know no racial, ethnic or socio-economic boundaries.

Because we believe that this travesty must be stopped and because we believe it the duty of every church to work within its community to raise awareness about social justice issues, Sawmill Baptist Church is joining an effort of the American Baptist Churches of Ohio to raise $17,000.00 by June 2008 through the "Break the Chains" project.

On Saturday, May 3, our church will have a Yard Sale to do our part to meet this goal. From 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., the church will be open to the community for anyone to come and make purchases from the many items that will be donated. Cash donations (including checks and money orders) will also be accepted in lieu of purchases to support this cause. All donations will be tax deductible.

The funds raised for this project will be distributed to six different ministries working to stop trafficking in Thailand, Costa Rica, Philippines, South Dakota, California and Illinois. For more information, go to http://www.abwmbreakthechains.org/ or call the church at 614-764-1141. To make a donation of items for the sale, call the church for more information.

Let's face it. Most of us aren't Billy Graham or Rick Warren or Bill Hybels. Not only have we never stood before a lot of people, but the thought of doing it brings back memories of those dreams you have where you are in public and discover you aren't wearing any clothes. Even more, you have believed that talking with people about Jesus is something for the "professionals" (i.e. - Pastor David, Pastor Jeff, Pastor Joe, etc.)

What would you do if someone asked you what a Christian believes? More than that, you wonder (1) Should a Christian have friends who aren't? (2) How do I talk to my unchurched friends about spiritual things?, and (3) How do I share what I believe about Jesus without breaking into a cold sweat and fainting on the spot?

If those are your questions, or if you just want to find out what it means to be a Christian in an every-day world, this series is for you. Join us on February 17 as we start together on "The Unexpected Adventure."

FEBRUARY 17 - "How To Give Away Your Faith"

FEBRUARY 24 - "What If Jesus Lived In My House?"

MARCH 2 - "Evangelism That Looks Like You"

IF YOU WANT TO BE A DISCIPLE, CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR. - Core Values

In Mark 10:43-45, Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many," (NLT) Servanthood is the essence of discipleship, because of lives are always to be outwardly focused. While a good self-image is important for effective living, this is not to be confused with the sin of selfishness or what Romans 12:3 describes as "thinking more highly of oneself that he ought to think." True discipleship is based on a correct view of who God is, who we are and how we should relate to both Him and others. If we remember that we are on earth to serve God and others for His glory, our actions will be reflective of His love for us and His willingness to put our need for salvation ahead of His own comfort, as Jesus set aside His glory to endure the cross on our behalf.

TEAMWORK IS ESSENTIAL FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY. - Core Values

In Luke 10:1, Jesus chose 72 disciples to be sent to the villages He planned to visit. In this, He gave us a pattern for teamwork, as they were sent in teams of two. The early missionary teams consisted of least two people. Church history has shown that teamwork is essential to effective ministry. Ecclesiastes 4:10 provides a clear reminder of the value of people working together. Teamwork provides for multiple perspectives in planning and problem solving, brings additional gifts and talents to the team and supplies encouragement as well as opportunities to celebrate victories.

EVERY BELIEVER IS SPIRITUALLY GIFTED FOR MINISTRY. - Core Values

1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 27 (NLT) says, "Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service in the church, but it is the same Lord we are serving . . . Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it." Every Christian has at least one spiritual gift. Discovering and using that gift(s) is a part of maturing process. A role of the church and its leadership is to help people discover their spiritual gifts as well as provide them with opportunities to use those gifts. If God has placed a gift in a church, it is His intent that it be used. This means that the more effective way of ministry development is assisting people in discovering their gifts, then connecting them with the ministries that will enable them to use them, rather than assigning people tasks with the hope that they will be able to fulfill their duties. Every member is a minister. Every task is important. You use what God has given and He'll do great things through you.

EXCELLENCE HONORS GOD AND REFLECTS HIS CHARACTER. - Core Values

As beings created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27), we are a reflection of His character. Nothing that God has created is second-rate or substandard in its design. Because of that, we are to strive for excellence in all that we do. While we know that out efforts will never be perfect while we are in this life, we are to use the resources God has given us with the goal of being the best we can be and doing the best we can do (2 Peter 1:5.)

LOST PEOPLE MATTER TO GOD, THEREFORE THEY MATTER TO US. - Core Values

The Scriptures are clear that while all people matter to God, He has special concern for those who do not have a relationship with Him. It is central to God's love that everyone come into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ and be received into His family (2 Peter 3:9.) Because we are His representatives on earth, Christians must make winning the lost a priority of the church's ministry. (Matthew 28:19) If this is not our first priority, the balance of our ministry call is without effect.

THE CHURCH IS MOST EFFECTIVE WHEN IT OPERATES IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY. - Core Values

The Bible is clear that the Christian life is to be lived out in community with other believers. Over 30 times, the phrase "one another" is used in admonitions regarding interpersonal relationships (Romans 15:7; Ephesians 4:32; Ephesians 5:21, etc.) The ministry of Christ is our example of this as He shared the three years of His earth life with 12 men who were with him daily, as well as with other friends with whom He had regular contact. Because Christianity is a relationship with God and because we are called to be a part of His family (Ephesians 2:19), the church is able to more fully do its work when cooperation and community are basic to our service.

CHRISTIANITY IS A RELATIONSHIP, NOT A RELIGION. - Core Values

Religion is man's attempt to reach God. Christianity is God reaching down to man to restore a relationship that we severed through our sin. In religion, people attempt to "balance that scales" of their "rights and wrongs" in order to please an unknowable god. In Christianity, God has revealed Himself to us through Jesus and provided a way for us to re-enter a relationship with Him (John 3:16.) Relationships are built on love and are nurtured through trust. The church is the visible example of God's love to people, meaning that our life needs to express that love in practical ways as we reach out to fellow Christians and those not yet a part of the family of God.
