HITCHHIKERS 4 JESUS - Youth Ministries

Yes, that's the name of our Youth Ministry. The question we get is, "Why?" Here's why . . .

"Hitchhikers" are people who are heading toward a destination. As Christ-followers, we know that heaven is our real home and we will be there someday. In the meantime, we are on earth to serve God. Hitchhikers also rely on people to help them get where they are going. We know that we need God as well other people in our lives on this journey of faith. Nobody can live a successful life on their own. Also, hitchhikers always have great stories of the road to tell. We want to tell people what it means to have Jesus as the center of our lives.

The other question that comes up is why did we use a "4" instead of "for." Truth is, it's catchier. (Caught your attention, right???)

Yeah, that's the name of the Youth Group. Why? We figured someone would ask that, so here's why . . .

"Hitchhikers 4 Jesus" means we are people who are moving toward a destination. Although we live on earth, the real home for Christians is heaven. To get where they are going, hitchhikers need the help of other people. We know that to live this life successfully, we need the helpm of Jesus and other Christians. (Nobody can do it themselves.) Also, hitchhikers always have great stories about their journey to tell. We want to let other people know what it means to have Jesus as the center of our life.

Also, you may want to know why we used a "4" and not "for" in the name. "4" is catchier - it caught your attention, right???

Late in the first century, the Apostle John got an assignment from Jesus - write letters to 7 churches with some words of commendation and warning. The words of those letters are in the first 3 chapters of the last book of the Bible - Revelation. After he wrote them, he took a trip into the future to se what the last days of planet Earth as we know it would be like. But, those letters are as relevant to us today as they were to the churches back then. During the next few weeks, we are going to look at those letters and see ourselves in each of them.

Sawmill Baptist Church started its 9th AWANA Club year on September 14, 2008. (This year, we have moved AWANA to Sunday evening.) We are glad to provide AWANA clubs for children ages 3 through grade 5. (If a child entering 6th grade would like to be an AWANA student for an additional year, this can be arranged by calling the church office and speaking with Pastor David.) This children's ministry offers great opportunities for fun as children engage in fellowship games, scripture memorization, and learning about Christ's love.

The AWANA program is divided into 3 groups: Cubbies (Preschool), Sparks (Kindergarten - 2nd grade) and Truth & Training (3rd - 5th/6th grade.) Awana meets on Sundays (September through May) from 6:00-7:30 p.m..

For information on becoming part of this vibrant children's ministry, please contact the church office at 614-764-1141.

Because we want to always show God's love in a practical way, Servant Evangelism is a part of our on-going ministry. On a regular basis, we go to community events to distribute bottled water, lollipops, handwarmers and whatever else we think of to the families attending ABSOLUTELY FREE! No strings attached - No "catch" - No hidden agenda - We simply to do it because we believe that God's wants us to be kind to everyone. We believe that "Small things done with great love can change the world!"This is part of the team that went to our SE project on May 26 at the Powell Memorial Day Parade. We gave out over 700 bottles of water, 600 Blow-Pops and 500 Patriotic Flutes. It was a fanatastic day!

The "WINGS" Women's Ministry seeks to provide opportunities for Bible study, times of spiritual inspiration and renewal, and the building of friendships among women. We meet at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd Monday of each month (at the church) and have a Small Group Bible Study (The Lydia GROW group) that meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (also at the church.) All women are invited to attend either or both events. Additionally, our women have enjoyed attending occasional retreats, national women's conferences, mission projects and fun outings together. In May 2008, we sponsored a Yard Sale and raised over $2300.00 for "Break the Chains", a ministry of the American Baptist Women, which is fighting human trafficking, the fastest growing criminal industry in the world and one which enslaves an estimated 800,000 women and children each year.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - FAQ

1. What is your worship service like?

Our 10:45 a.m. service is approximately 60-75 minutes in length. It features our Praise Team leading contemporary music with a touch of traditional music, occasional dramas and multi-media elements, as well as a relevant message based on a biblical text. The atmosphere is also relaxed, friendly and comfortable.

2. What is considered appropriate dress for your church?

We don't make dress an issue at our church. We have folk who feel comfortable in jeans and those who like ties and dresses. Feel free to dress in a way that's appropriate for you.

3. What's available for my children on Sunday mornings?

During our Sunday School time (9:30 – 10:35 a.m.) classes are offered for children and youth of all ages. There is also an adult small group that meets during that same time frame.

During the 10:45 a.m. service we provide nursery care for infants and small children (up through age 2) as well as an additional activity and learning time for older children (ages 3 – grade 5). Older children worship with their families until the offering when they're dismissed for their program.

4. Are guests expected to give an offering in your services?

No. You are our guest and we're very glad that you've decided to spend some of your valuable time worshiping God with us. You are free to give an offering, but you're certainly not expected to do so.

5. Are guests singled out or forced to identify themselves?

No. We realize many guests are "church shopping" and just want to check us out initially. Our Front Line Team (greeter & ushers) will extend a friendly welcome to you when you walk in and provide you with some information about the church. But you will not be asked to identify yourself publicly, wear a badge, stand up, raise your hand or be embarrassed in any way.

6. What kind of Baptist are you?

There are several Baptist denominations and many independent Baptist churches in our country. We're affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA – the oldest Baptist denomination in the United States. Our church could be described as evangelical and conservative in terms of theology.

7. What does your church believe?

Baptists are non-creedal, meaning we do not have an official statement of faith to which all members must subscribe. Nevertheless, all staff and elders of the church must hold to the following beliefs in order to serve in their positions of leadership. You should also expect these beliefs to be assumed in the Pastor's Sunday messages.

We believe the Bible is the authoritative and inspired Word of God and provides all the information necessary to live a faithful and obedient life before God.

We believe God is three persons in one, the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe Jesus Christ is the incarnation of the second person of the Trinity: the Son of God.

We believe Jesus is fully divine and human.

We believe Jesus was born of a virgin woman named Mary.

We believe Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross for the sins of humanity and rose again physically from the dead.

We believe Jesus ascended into heaven following his resurrection and that he will return again someday in the future.

We believe that human beings are sinful and cannot save themselves.

We believe that eternal life and/or salvation is a gift of God's grace that cannot be either earned or deserved through human behavior.

We believe this gift of salvation is received by faith in Jesus and his finished work of redemption.

We believe a person is born again by regeneration through the Holy Spirit.

We believe every believer is called to live an increasingly obedient, Spirit-filled life as an expression of gratitude and love for the gift of eternal life.

We believe every Christian is a member of the universal, spiritual Church – the Body of Christ – and ought to join a local expression of that entity, i.e. a local church for the purposes of worship, growth and outreach.

We believe that there will be an eternal judgment and that those who have trusted Christ will enter into heaven and those who have not trusted Christ will enter into hell.

In a church family, everyone in every age group should have an opportunity for building relationships, growing in faith and serving God. The Golden Harvesters is our ministry for Senior Adults. Every Christ-follower is called to help care for those in need. Through our association with Better Way Ministry (located in the Short North), we help provide a meal to those who rely on BWM for basic life needs. On the first Tuesday evening of each month, we go to BWM to deliver and help serve the meal, as well as lead a worship service and visit with those attending. We also provide an annual financial gift to BWM and have a Better Way Ministry collection of warm clothing items each December. On Saturday, May 31, we made a special trip to Better Way with a team of people who had never had the opportunity to serve there before. Pastor David & Paulette Nuhfer and Pastor Jeff & Martha Huff led 16 others on this short term mission to help others. We fed over 85 people and had a lot of fun doing it! The picture is part of the team that went with us.

If your interested in participating in this ministry, please contact Pastor David.

Thank you for visiting Sawmill Baptist's website. I hope that you'll have time to take a look around and see what we doing as we are "Connecting with people to connect them with Jesus."One of the things most people want to know about a church has to do with the pastor: Questions like, "Who is he? Why would he want to be a pastor? Is he allowed to like 'normal people' stuff?" Most of all, "What does he believe as a Christian?"Last question first - I became a Christian when I was 9-years old. My parents took me to church and I heard all the Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments from people who cared about me and wanted me to know how much God loves me. When I was 9, I knew that God loved me and wanted me to go to heaven when I died. I also knew that Jesus had died on the cross so I could be forgiven of my sins. One day, during a church service, the pastor asked anyone who wanted to be "Born Again" (ask Jesus to be the Savior and Leader of his/her life) to come up to the front so he could pray with them. During the song they were singing, I went up. No sparks flew - no rush of wind - no fancy anything - Just a young boy who wanted to accept the love God had offered the best way a 9-year boy could.During the next 20 years, a lot happened - I had the normal pains of being a teenager, went to college, got a job, had cancer (and recovered), got married to a super lady named Paulette and became an instant dad to Charity and Chad, had cancer again (recovered again), was a teacher, a store manager, a loan office manager and, in 1988, left for seminary to study to be a Pastor. I have pastored churches in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana and have been at Sawmill since May 2006. (There are a lot more details. You can e-mail me if you'd like to know more.) That also helps to answer, "Who is he?"Now, why would I want to be a pastor? Mostly because I know that is what God has gifted me to be, but also because I think it is the best job in the world. I get to spend each day doing whatever needs done to help people have a relationship with God that starts on earth and lasts forever. Not many jobs involved eternal benefits. I also love to help people make positive, permanent life changes using God's principles from the Bible. What about liking "normal stuff?" Yes, I like a lot of normal stuff - I am a fan of both the Pittsburgh Steelers & Penguins (I was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area) and the Indianapolis Colts (I adopted them when I lived in Indianapolis.) I enjoy working out on a regular basis with Paulette (that super lady I married in 1984.) I like "Mike & Ike" candy (It's not an addiction, but I keep a regular supply available at home) and Paulette's cooking (the reason I also work out regularly.) I like the great music from the 1970's (Chicago, Dan Fogelberg, John Denver, Carpenters), but also like some more contemporary Christian groups (Jars of Clay, Jeremy Camp, Casting Crowns.) And, I enjoy any opportunity to get a new power tool. My favorite restaurant? Locally, it's a coin flip between Fazolis and O'Charley's, but my absolute favorite is Johnny Rocco's Italian Grill in Niagara Falls, Canada.Anyway, enough about me. I hope I'll have an opportunity to meet you sometime soon. On the pages of this website are the times for worship and other groups that meet during the week. Best time to catch me is on Sunday morning (or call the church during the week if you'd like to drop by.) Unless I'm on vacation (one of the other "normal stuff" things that I like), I'll be here. If you have any questions, just call me at 614-764-1141. I'll be glad to answer them. Hope to see you soon. In the meantime, remember that you were created by God to love Him and have a relationship with Him that last forever!

No Title - Break The Chains SA

BREAK THE CHAINS - AN END TO HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking is the 2nd largest criminal industry in the world and the fastest growing. It victimizes women and children by subjecting them to exploitation through fraud or coercion. Many are forced to work in prostitution or the sex entertainment industry, as well as in domestic servitude and restaurant, janitorial, sweatshop factory and migrant agricultural work. Traffickers use fear and forced confinement to keep their victims enslaved. Each year, approximately 600,000 to 800,000 victims are trafficked across the international borders world-wide, with 14,500 and 17,500 into the United States. Victims know no racial, ethnic or socio-economic boundaries.

Because we believe that this travesty must be stopped and because we believe it the duty of every church to work within its community to raise awareness about social justice issues, Sawmill Baptist Church is joining an effort of the American Baptist Churches of Ohio to raise $17,000.00 by June 2008 through the "Break the Chains" project.

On Saturday, May 3, our church will have a Yard Sale to do our part to meet this goal. From 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., the church will be open to the community for anyone to come and make purchases from the many items that will be donated. Cash donations (including checks and money orders) will also be accepted in lieu of purchases to support this cause. All donations will be tax deductible.

The funds raised for this project will be distributed to six different ministries working to stop trafficking in Thailand, Costa Rica, Philippines, South Dakota, California and Illinois. For more information, go to http://www.abwmbreakthechains.org/ or call the church at 614-764-1141. To make a donation of items for the sale, call the church for more information.

Let's face it. Most of us aren't Billy Graham or Rick Warren or Bill Hybels. Not only have we never stood before a lot of people, but the thought of doing it brings back memories of those dreams you have where you are in public and discover you aren't wearing any clothes. Even more, you have believed that talking with people about Jesus is something for the "professionals" (i.e. - Pastor David, Pastor Jeff, Pastor Joe, etc.)

What would you do if someone asked you what a Christian believes? More than that, you wonder (1) Should a Christian have friends who aren't? (2) How do I talk to my unchurched friends about spiritual things?, and (3) How do I share what I believe about Jesus without breaking into a cold sweat and fainting on the spot?

If those are your questions, or if you just want to find out what it means to be a Christian in an every-day world, this series is for you. Join us on February 17 as we start together on "The Unexpected Adventure."

FEBRUARY 17 - "How To Give Away Your Faith"

FEBRUARY 24 - "What If Jesus Lived In My House?"

MARCH 2 - "Evangelism That Looks Like You"

MARCH 9 - "How To Build Evangelistic Relationships"

What does the word AWANA mean? - AWANA

Are you wondering what AWANA means? AWANA is actually an acronym for "Approved workmen are not ashamed," and comes from 2 Timothy 2:15 which says "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (NIV)

We also provide an annual financial gift to BWM and have a Better Way Ministry collection of warm clothing items each January.

If your interested in participating in this ministry, please contact Pastor Nuhfer.

IF YOU WANT TO BE A DISCIPLE, CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR. - Core Values

In Mark 10:43-45, Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many," (NLT) Servanthood is the essence of discipleship, because of lives are always to be outwardly focused. While a good self-image is important for effective living, this is not to be confused with the sin of selfishness or what Romans 12:3 describes as "thinking more highly of oneself that he ought to think." True discipleship is based on a correct view of who God is, who we are and how we should relate to both Him and others. If we remember that we are on earth to serve God and others for His glory, our actions will be reflective of His love for us and His willingness to put our need for salvation ahead of His own comfort, as Jesus set aside His glory to endure the cross on our behalf.

TEAMWORK IS ESSENTIAL FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY. - Core Values

In Luke 10:1, Jesus chose 72 disciples to be sent to the villages He planned to visit. In this, He gave us a pattern for teamwork, as they were sent in teams of two. The early missionary teams consisted of least two people. Church history has shown that teamwork is essential to effective ministry. Ecclesiastes 4:10 provides a clear reminder of the value of people working together. Teamwork provides for multiple perspectives in planning and problem solving, brings additional gifts and talents to the team and supplies encouragement as well as opportunities to celebrate victories.
